Combs Bait and Tackle has been here since the early 40's.
Bill (as a kid) used to ride his bike here and would always dream of not only
owning a bait and tackle but of owning this one. Then in 1989, Bill and his wife
Denise bought their dream.
Not only has Bill lived and fished locally all his life
but is also a licensed captain who ran charter for 13 years including running
the 62' Hatteras named "El Cid" out of Freeport. He has fished
offshore, inshore and fresh water and is more than willing to share his
knowledge with all. That is where we came up with our slogans
"Personal
Service for a Fisherman by a Fisherman" and
"Anyone can sell
you bait, We help you catch fish!".
We are a family run business. At any time you may find
Bill or Denise running the store with help from their daughters or Ben or Keith. All of us are more than ready to help.
Both Bill and Denise are very involved with the fisheries
of the future of recreational fishing. Bill was the Vice President of the New
York Tackle and Trade Association (NYFTTA) and Denise ran the NYFTTA Annual
Island Wide Tournament. They continue their involvement to improve the current fishing regulations, establish longer seasons and increase bag limits.
Combs' Annual Duke Of Fluke Tournament, held each June, is the largest fluke tournament in the country. Bill is happy to dispense his expertise about fishing hot spots, new techniques, equipment and methods. His informative fishing reports are featured weekly in 'The Fisherman'.
